After the Devastation

John 13:35

By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

The nation is reeling from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. State, federal, and volunteer agencies are mobilizing to meet the needs of the tens of thousands of people caught in the aftermath of the devastating winds and flooding along the Gulf Coast. "We're dealing with one of the worst...disasters in the nation's history," said President Bush in an address to the nation. "Right now, it seems awfully dark to those affected, and I understand that."

Looting, Rape, and Murder are occurring in New Orleans as chaos reigns.  Jeremiah once commented that the heart of man is exceedingly wicked, and the images we see on the television do not dispute that statement.   We know that the enemy revels in this situation, yet light is still there in the darkness.   Churches across the country including ours are already sending teams of people to help, millions of dollars are pouring into the region, and we know that God loves each one of those people that are homeless right now.   So you might be asking, “What can I do to help?  What can I do to show love to these people?”

1.      Be praying – Give thanks for those who have survived the devastation.  Ask for mercy and grace in the lives of those who lost loved ones.  Pray for decisive leadership at the Local, State, and National levels.  “The effective prayer of a righteous man avails much.” James 5:16

2.      Be a provision – Give money to Samaritan’s Purse, Food for the Hungry, Mercy Corp, or whatever organization you feel God is leading you to support.  If you want to donate to Calvary Chapel New Orleans, you can click on the link on our front page for mailing information.

3.      Be a participant – We will be organizing a team to travel to the area within the next month or so to go help with cleanup and building.  If you would like to help out, you can contact us here.  You can also contact Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Team.

I know that many wonder where God is during these times.  Be assured that He is right there next to those who are suffering and hurting.  He will carry them through the fire, the flood, the fury of the storm.   One of the ways He does this is through us.  So be praying, be a provision, and be a participant.

Think about it…
