Building On The Foundation

1 Corinthians 3:11-15

11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

When you became a Christian, a foundation was laid.  The foundational truth that Jesus Christ died for your sins, rose from the dead, and is sitting at the right hand of the Father.  It’s the foundational truth that you were aware that you were a sinner needing Christ’s forgiveness and His righteousness.   But what happened after you became a Christian?  Paul here in his letter to the squabbling, jealous, division-filled Corinthians states that a building project is commenced.  Paul is the “Arkitekton” or Master Builder that started laying the truths of the Gospel on top of the glorious foundation.  Precious teaching. like fine Gold or Jewels.   The problem was that many were preaching divisive and heretical doctrines that were “wood and hay”.

We do that sometimes in our lives as well.  Instead of building upon the foundation of Jesus with good Bible teaching, Spirit-filled worship, and fellowship with other believers, we instead choose to chase psychological theories, experiential encounters, higher “mystical” ways of knowing God.   There are movements even among strong evangelical churches that are filled with teachings that contradict scripture and the purpose of the Church.    The plain teaching of the Word is considered “boring” and “out of touch” with today’s media savvy generation.   How sad if you feel that way.   God’s revelation to man through the WORD is more than sufficient and definitely a better building material than the fluffy straw, hay or wood that makes up today’s mystical journeys and purpose driven, self-focused look at the scripture.

Make no mistake, as a Christian it is not only the responsibility of the Pastors and Bible Teachers to focus on the things of God, it is your responsibility as well.  Make sure you focus on the precious gold, silver and jewels that pour from the pages of scripture.  Then you will have your reward in heaven and not be “smoking” from the burnt hay.

Think about it…
