And God Spoke

Hebrews 1:1 – 3

Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets.

But now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he made the universe and everything in it.

The Son reflects God's own glory, and everything about him represents God exactly. He sustains the universe by the mighty power of his command. After he died to cleanse us from the stain of sin, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God of heaven.

Many religions claim to have heard from their god and that their “god” speaks to them.  No religion aside from those founded on the Bible make the sort of claim that we do; that is, that our God exists as pure Spirit, eternal, infinite and transcendent.  It is a bold claim that can not be proved nor disproved, only accepted or rejected.  Since human reason alone is doomed to fail us in this debate, let us reconsider the Way that we “defend the hope of our salvation”.  Consider the Word of God as a Person revealed by His Holy Spirit through the Bible writers.

  1. The Creation event brought an entire universe into being at the command of God.  In your English translation, you could count a few hundred words cataloging each time that “God said”, and something came to be.  In Hebrew, it would be about 100 words.  We are not perfectly sure whether or not God’s commands were truly verbal since there was no way to comprehend or hear words before there was a place for sound waves to wiggle in the air.  The New Testament informs us in the first chapter of the gospel of John that Jesus Christ Himself is the Creator.  We also call Him “The Word”, or Logos.  In Greek, Logos means mind, intellect or thought.  So, in Christianity, the entire system is founded on the eternal, infinite, immutable and entirely “thoughtful” Word of God!  Perhaps this is why God included in the list of things that we are to worship Him with … the word “mind”.

  2. God rescued His chosen people from the Egyptians and miraculously led them to the place where He would speak to them directly.  His Words were given to establish a covenant and declare His perfect righteousness.  The Apostle Paul teaches us in the New Testament that this Law was a “tutor” to show us our need for Christ.  The Law, or as the Hebrew of Exodus 20 states, “the Words” were that tutor.  Amazing!  The Person Who is the Word of God is our personal tutor to show us the Way to Him!

  3. Finally, consider the words of the Living Word Himself when He bore our sins to the cross.  Interesting … there were very few words that He gave … and none of them were given to save Himself.  All of the words that He could have said to bring it all to an end, to judge the world right then, to speak with the power of Creation again and to command legions of angels to destroy His enemies.  No such words were uttered.  Instead, in His last words, He pardoned the sin of a thief and forgave those who killed them.

You see, the speech of our God is not always a declaration or a command or a judgment; rather, it is (1) the very Word of Life, (2) it is the teaching Word of a loving Father and (3) it is the Word of forgiveness.  No other god is like our God!  No other love is like the Love we share with our Heavenly Father.  Salvation belongs to our God alone and in accordance with His Word.

Think about it…
