Moving
Genesis 35:1
God said to
Jacob, "Now move on to Bethel and settle there. Build an altar there to
worship me--the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother,
Esau."
Moving
is such a pain. Moving your entire family, which in my case is a wife,
two children and a dog, is not the most fun thing in the world. However,
what happens when God calls you to move somewhere. In my case it was to
start a church. In your case, it might be to get a different job, or keep
your current job as your company moves or transfers. It might be because
you want to be closer to family. Does it scare you? Are you tired and
stressed? I know my wife is! However, when God calls us to move, it is
typically because He wants us closer to Him!
God in
this verse is speaking to Jacob after his sons had really screwed things
up. They had taken revenge against a whole city, killing the men for
what had happened to their sister. Jacob is struggling, his kids are out
of control, and he doesn’t know what to do. But God knows. God has a
plan, and He calls Jacob to move to Bethel, which is literally, House of
God. God is telling him, “Jacob…buddy…it’s time to move on! You need to
come closer to me…worship me…and settle down!”. Notice the phrase
“settle there”? God just doesn’t want us to show up…sing a quick
song…listen to a quick verse and then breeze on. No way! God wants us to
settle into our worship. Move close to Him and STAY close to Him. Don’t
be the wanderer that Jacob was. God was reminding Jacob of how He
appeared to him in his darkest hour. The time when his brother Esau was
on the hunt for Jacob’s head.
It’s
such a shame that we don’t establish routines that we can sink into and be
comfortable while worshipping the Almighty. Now, that doesn’t mean that
it become the same old worship by rote. Instead it means to have a sense
of familiarity to the way that you approach the Father. My son Aaron
knows that when he hangs around me that he can just sit next to me and
lean on me. I love that! Do I get upset at him and say, “Aaron, that’s
boring to me…you obviously don’t mean anything by coming up and leaning
under my arm!”? Not on your life! I love when he just burrows up to my
arm and enjoys some moments of togetherness. I know that it probably
won’t last when he’s 16 and over 6 feet tall.
I hope
you all move closer to God this week and burrow into His Grace and Love
that He has for you. Moving closer to God is not a pain. Settling in
with Him is even better!
