The Divine Nature

Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

The creation of the world was certainly an awesome event … one of the first “instant replays” that I want to see when I get to heaven.  The ease with which we are easily impressed with scientific facts about creation leads us to neglect the most important fact of creation; that is, that God’s Eternal Power and Divine Nature are “clearly evident” by observation of it!  In fact, the facts are so clear that we are left without any excuse before God for disbelief.

In context, this passage is directed at those whose unrighteousness is so bloated that they live a lifestyle that suppresses all truth.  Furthermore, they glory in gods fashioned by their own hands and worship the lusts of their own flesh.  Paul is making it clear to the Roman church just how bad it is in their hometown.  (Before moving on to the point of this devotion, I just wanted to clarify the primary context of Romans chapter one.)

Consider the first verses of Genesis chapter one …

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

We know from the gospel of John chapter one, that (1) Jesus was there “in the beginning”, and (2) that He is also the Creator and (3) that He is also the Light of Life itself!  If we pay close attention to the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ in all of the gospels, we notice a pattern of compassion aimed at the most needy people that have ever lived.  In one sense, we could say that those who came in contact with Him had lives that were completely and utterly, “formless and void”.  In Hebrew, the phrase “formless and void” is more clearly understood as “unformed and unfilled”.

If you have ever felt like your life is “unformed and unfilled”, then you are not alone; this condition is a common feature of the human experience.  The thing that you can find comfort in is the fact that God has been in the business of calling light out of that “formless and void” state since the beginning of time.  Even more impressive is the fact that His light is Life itself.  His Life is Life eternal and if you are His child He is at work shaping your life into a beautiful and abundant thing.

Think about it…
